Meet the Team: Jesper "Jeppie" Paardekooper
Als CTO (Chief Technical Officer) staat Jesper “Jeppie” aan het roer van Team Development, maar voor de rest van het team staat hij ook aan het roer als het gaat om lunchtijd. Het zijn de magische woorden van Jesper die het hele kantoor uit de bureaustoelen tilt om in een poké bowl of belegd broodje te duiken.
Komt de naam Jesper Paardekooper jou al bekend voor? Dat kan! Jesper is er al sinds het prille begin van Rinkel bij, toen het allemaal op de zolderkamer in Hellevoetsluis begon. Als developer sta je vaak op de achtergrond, maar nu 100% verdiend op de voorgrond!

As CTO (Chief Technical Officer) Jesper "Jeppie" is at the helm of the Development Team, but for the rest of the team he is also the boss when it comes to lunch time. Jesper knows the magic word that gets the whole office on their feet to dive into a poké bowl or a sandwich.
Does the name Jesper Paardekooper sound familiar to you? It should! Jesper has been with Rinkel since the very beginning, when it all started in an attic room in Hellevoetsluis. Developers are often in the background, but Jesper is 100% deservedly up front!

So, what’s the first thing people think of when they hear your name?
I think it differs a bit from generation to generation. Older Dutch people probably (hopefully!) think of Jesper Olsen, the striker at Ajax from 1981-1984, who I’m named after.
The younger generation among us probably thinks of Jesper Grønkjær, the outfielder who also played for Ajax from 1998-2000.
But most people call me Jasper, unfortunately.
What exactly do you do at Rinkel?
As CTO, or Chief Technical Officer, I’m responsible for the development and technical quality of the My Rinkel platform. I’ve got a double role at the moment: I lead the Development Team, which means I set the roadmap together with the stakeholders, and take care of the planning.
But I also work on developing every layer of the My Rinkel platform and the iPhone app. From back-end (everything that happens in the background) to front-end (like how the app works and the website looks) and everything in between: I’ve got my finger in all the pies.
What’s your favourite office saying?
“Lunch?”
At the office we always eat at 11:30. That might seem early, but the advantage is that it’s still nice and quiet in the restaurant. Fortunately, my colleagues don't mind eating a little earlier either, because I only need one word to get them on board: “Lunch?”
They see me coming at 11:30 and often I don't even have to say anything. We all eat together, so it's always a nice shared moment. Plus, our lunches are paid for, which is a real perk. I think the fact that lunches are free at Rinkel also contributes to the popularity of this office saying.
What do you like best about the Development Team at Rinkel?
Without a doubt, the variety. One day I’m working on a REST API and the next day on a React interface. No two weeks are the same, in fact, no two days are the same!
I also enjoy seeing the effect our growth has on our team. A few years ago (when we didn’t have so many customers and colleagues), we had quite a lot of responsibilities as a team:
- Ongoing development of the platform
- Maintaining certain parts of the infrastructure
- And very occasionally, thinking about marketing communications or writing blogs or news articles. Although I must confess that this is not where my talent lies. ;-)
As our organisation grows from startup to scaleup, you notice that this is changing. We used to do customer support together, for example, simply because Arthur was not yet part of our team at the time. But it’s so great to have him on board!
The same goes for our fine marketing team who (thankfully) never ask me to write a blog, something we used to have to do ourselves.
We also have colleagues to maintain the infrastructure so that the Development Team can focus on what they do best: building great software for our customers!
What are you most proud of?
How much we have grown at Rinkel. Jeroen and I started building Rinkel in my attic in Hellevoetsluis. At that time, we both had our own businesses and Rinkel was a hobby project for the evenings and weekends. Neither of us had any children back then, either. ;-)
With 7,500 customers and a team of 10, you could say it’s become a hobby that has gotten out of hand.
What frustrations faced by your customers do you want to solve?
When we had just started Rinkel, the telecom industry was completely new to me. I was also surprised by the user-friendliness of the average telecom solution for entrepreneurs: or rather, the lack of it. It’s not the best; and that’s putting it mildly.
From day one, we’ve always strived to make the My Rinkel platform as user-friendly as possible. We don´t just come up with features that sound amazing but add no value, we strive and focus on thinking together about what will really help entrepreneurs.
Our goal is for everyone to be able to work with our platform: that anyone can set up and make changes to their business phone system from their pocket. Even people who are less technically minded.
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
I’m married to a Canadian, so normally we go on holidays to Canada. My wife is from Calgary, near Banff National Park. That has become my favourite holiday destination! Our honeymoon was in Tofino, on Vancouver Island. I can highly recommend alternating between the beaches and the mountains.
What keeps you busy outside of Rinkel?
We moved to a house with a garden two years ago. You’ll often find me there, messing around. I also like doing DIY (our house was self built), but since our son was born I don't get much time for that any more. I’m also an aspiring Lego Master and I like watching football!

Jesper being our CTO was not without the necessary ‘hiccups’. In 2008, before Rinkel was founded, he made the support department of a previous employer anything but happy.
“Just after I’d started there, I once ran an UPDATE query without a WHERE statement on a production database.” The ultimate rookie mistake among developers. Fortunately, there was still a backup available, so the damage was limited. But it did make customers angry: among other things, their printers, computers and modems temporarily stopped working.
“Jeroen was there when I made that mistake. And yet he still asked me to set up Rinkel with him. Kind of special, right?”

Wat is het eerste waar mensen aan denken als ze jouw naam horen?
Dat verschilt denk ik een beetje per generatie. De wat oudere Nederlander denkt (hopelijk) aan Jesper Olsen, spits bij Ajax van 1981-1984, waar ik naar vernoemd ben.
De jongere generatie onder ons denkt waarschijnlijk aan Jesper Grønkjær, buitenspeler bij hetzelfde Ajax van 1998-2000.
Maar de meeste mensen noemen mij helaas Jasper.
Wat doe je precies bij Rinkel?
Als CTO, ook wel Chief Technical Officer, ben ik verantwoordelijk voor de doorontwikkeling en technische kwaliteit van het Mijn Rinkel platform. Mijn rol is nu op dit moment die van meewerkend voorman: ik geef leiding aan Team Development, bepaal de roadmap in overleg met de stakeholders en draag zorg voor de planning.
Daarnaast ontwikkel ik ook nog volop mee aan elke laag van het Mijn Rinkel platform en de iPhone app. Van back-end (alles wat op de achtergrond gebeurt) tot front-end (zoals hoe de app werkt en de website eruit ziet) en alles wat ertussenin zit: overal heb ik wel een vinger in de pap.
Wat is je favoriete kantoor uitspraak?
“Eten?”
Op kantoor eten we altijd om 11:30. Dat lijkt vroeg (en dat is het eigenlijk ook wel), maar dan is het nog lekker rustig in het restaurant. Gelukkig vinden de collega’s het ook niet erg om wat eerder te eten, want ik heb maar één woord nodig om ze mee te krijgen: “Eten?”
Ze zien me om 11:30 al aan komen lopen en vaak hoef ik het niet eens te zeggen. We eten ook met zijn allen tegelijk, dus het is ook altijd een gezellig moment. Plus, onze lunches zijn verzorgd, dus iedere dag subliem. Ik denk dat dit ook wel bijdraagt aan de populariteit van deze kantoor uitspraak.
Wat vind je het leukste aan Team Development en Rinkel?
Dat is 100% de afwisseling. De ene dag sleutel ik aan een REST API en de andere dag aan een React interface. Er is geen week hetzelfde, of wat zeg ik, geen dag hetzelfde!
Ik vind het ook leuk om te zien wat onze groei doet met de invulling van ons team. Een paar jaar geleden (toen we nog niet zoveel klanten en collega’s hadden) hadden we als team best veel verantwoordelijkheden:
- Het (door)ontwikkelen van het platform
- Onderhoud van bepaalde delen van de infrastructuur
- En heel soms ook meedenken over marketing uitingen of het schrijven van blogs of nieuwsartikelen. Al moet ik bekennen dat daar niet mijn talent ligt. ;-)
Nu onze organisatie van startup richting scaleup groeit, merk je dat hier verandering in komt. Zo deden we gezamenlijk de klantondersteuning, simpelweg omdat Arthur toen nog geen onderdeel was van ons team. Maar wat zijn we blij met hem!
Hetzelfde geldt voor ons fijne marketingteam die mij (gelukkig) nooit vraagt om een blog te schrijven, iets wat we voorheen natuurlijk wel zelf moesten doen.
Ook hebben we collega’s voor het onderhoud van de infrastructuur zodat Team Development zich kan focussen op waar ze goed in zijn: mooie software bouwen voor onze klanten!
Waar ben je het meest trots op?
Hoe hard we zijn gegroeid met Rinkel. Jeroen en ik zijn bij mij op zolder in Hellevoetsluis begonnen aan de bouw van Rinkel. We hadden op dat moment beiden een eigen bedrijf en hadden Rinkel erbij als hobbyproject voor in de avonduurtjes en de weekenden. Toen hadden we beiden nog geen kinderen. ;-)
Je kunt met recht zeggen dat het inmiddels, met 6.000 kanten en een team van 10 man, een uit de hand gelopen hobby is geworden.
Welke frustratie van klanten wil jij oplossen?
Toen we net begonnen met Rinkel was de telecombranche compleet nieuw voor mij. Ik heb me toen ook verbaasd over de gebruiksvriendelijkheid van de gemiddelde telecomoplossing voor ondernemers. Die is niet best. En dat is nog zacht uitgedrukt.
Wij hebben vanaf dag 1 er altijd naar gestreefd om het Mijn Rinkel-platform zo gebruiksvriendelijk mogelijk te maken. Niet allerlei toeters en bellen waardoor je door de bomen het bos niet meer ziet, maar juist meedenken over waar ondernemers nu écht mee geholpen zijn.
Ons doel is dat iedereen met ons platform kan werken: dat je gewoon vanuit je broekzak een telefooncentrale kunt inrichten en aanpassen. Ook de mensen die wat minder technisch zijn ingesteld.
Wat is je favoriete vakantiestekkie?
Ik ben getrouwd met een Canadese, dus normaal gesproken gaan we op vakantie naar Canada. Mijn vrouw komt uit Calgary, vlakbij Banff National Park. Dat is wel mijn favoriete vakantiebestemming geworden! Onze huwelijksreis was in Tofino, op Vancouver Island. Dat is ook een absolute aanrader: stranden en bergen wisselen elkaar af.
Wat houdt jou bezig buiten Rinkel om?
We zijn twee jaar geleden verhuisd naar een huis met tuin. Daar ben ik vaak te vinden en rommel ik wat af. Klussen doe ik ook graag (ons huis is/was een klushuis), maar daar kom ik sinds de geboorte van ons zoontje niet veel meer aan toe. Verder ben ik aspirant Lego Master en kijk ik graag voetbal!

Dat Jesper nu onze CTO is, is natuurlijk ook niet zonder de nodige lessen geweest. Zo heeft hij in 2008, voordat Rinkel werd opgericht, de supportafdeling van een vorige werkgever alles behalve gelukkig gemaakt.
“Toen ik net begon met werken heb ik een keer een UPDATE query zonder WHERE-statement uitgevoerd op een productiedatabase.” De ultieme rookie mistake onder de developers. Gelukkig was er nog een back-up beschikbaar waardoor de schade beperkt bleef. Maar het zorgde wel voor boze klanten, want onder andere de printers, computers en modems van de klanten deden het tijdelijk niet meer.
“Jeroen was erbij toen ik die fout maakte. En toch vroeg hij mij om Rinkel te starten. Erg bijzonder.”
